Lesson: Teams and Why They Matter
This lesson: Teams and why they matter is as much a primer on working together as it is a statement on the future of work. Humans need to be able to relate to each other and work together. The idea of a lone genius is an outmoded trope.
More than ever students need diversity and social and emotional learning experiences to help them in the real world, POST COVID. This series of activities helps build a foundation for those skills.
Materials
- Notepad and clipboard
- Pens or pencils
- Adhesive circles in red, yellow, and green
- Whiteboard
- Dry Erase Markers
- Creativity
- Empathy
Instructions
- Randomly divide students into groups
- Provide each student with a notepad, a clipboard and a writing utensil
- Task each student group to create a name for their group
- Give them about five minutes - the name of the group is not as important as the naming
- Record the name of the group on the white board
- Every time someone does a kind thing they get a check on the board and a green dot
- Every time someone does something that is against the team's interest they get a yellow dot
- Every time someone does something that is out of the rules, they get a red dot
- The groups of teams then get to determine discipline (within reason)
- Whatever discipline the entire camp decides is appropriate, they all must do it one time
- The discipline must be clear not an abstraction
- Abstraction leads to persecution and that is NOT teamwork
- Every day talk about this system and how it works or doesn't work
- Feelings and empathy are key here.
