Empowering Learners Through Applied STEM Learning

BioTech Summer Camp

In this popular summer camp students will be introduced to the multiple ecosystems, animals, labs, and resources available at Mezzacello Urban Farm. BioTechnology is a key facet of our work here at Mezzacello. The integration of livestock, plants, soil, water, and energy systems to better achieve sustainability are covered and expanded upon. This is a clean hand/dirty hand camp. There will mud, manure, dirt, and live animals as well as robots, sensors, power systems, and biology labs.

There will also be lots of fun, games, design challenges and team building activities. Students will learn the basics of integrated enclosed ecosystems and how to maximize natural, renewable resources in the urban environment to create a healthy home for humans, animals, pollinators, soil microbes, and compost.

This was the most amazing experience I have ever had at a camp. I felt powerful and trusted and I love working with the animals!

Izzy – Summer Camper

This camp involves wild farm animals like rabbits, ducks and chickens, as well as quail, fish, and various insects. All animals are housed safely and involve very little threat. In BioTech we will be studying the health, maintenance and physiology of few key species in a safe lab environment. There will be adult supervision and sanitary practices and precautions will be taken.

The camp requires that all students come prepared to learn on a working farm. That means long pants and access to sterilizable rubber boots.

BioTech Age Range and Leadership Academy

This camp is appropriate for rising elementary and middle school-aged children. There is also a Leadership Track that will be offered for students who show great promise as near peer and peer-to-peer mentorship. Parts of this camp will in fact be taught by peer mentors that are other campers’ ages. This is a feature of all camps at Mezzacello.

This five day camp will be offered in May, June, July, and August.

BioEngineering Summer Camp

In this popular summer camp students will be introduced to the multiple ecosystems, systems, labs, tools, and resources available at Mezzacello Urban Farm. BioEngineering is a key facet of our work here at Mezzacello. The integration of design thinking, advanced technology such as 3D Printing, Robotics, Automation Systems, and Data and Coding Tech, and energy systems to better achieve sustainability are covered and expanded upon. This is a clean hand/dirty hand camp. There will mud, manure, dirt, and live animals as well as robots, sensors, power systems, and biology labs.

There will also be lots of fun, games, design challenges and team building activities. Students will learn the basics of integrated enclosed ecosystems and how to use design thinking, technology, as well as natural and renewable resources in the urban environment to create a healthy home for humans, animals, pollinators, soil microbes, and compost.

Getting to design and build systems and solutions that benefit the farm and the animals was so cool! It was a blast! And I can’t believe they used my design as the final!

Liam – Summer Camper

This camp involves wild farm animals and various insects. All animals are safely and securely housed and adult supervision is guaranteed. Summer Camp Students will be handling various species to determine the best solution to solving a BioEngineering solution that is best for that species of livestock or insect.

The camp requires that all students come prepared to learn on a working farm and ready to use tools in a challenging but responsible way. That means long pants, gloves and access to sterilizable rubber boots.

BioMechanics Summer Camp

In this popular summer camp students will be introduced to the multiple ecosystems, systems, Chemical and mechanical solutions, labs, tools, and resources available at Mezzacello Urban Farm. BioMechanics extends both BioTech and BioEngineering with a key focus on molecular and physical mechanics which is a key facet of our work here at Mezzacello. The integration of design thinking, chemistry, simple machines, as well as Robotics, Automation Systems, and Data and Modeling Tech, and energy systems allow students to better achieve sustainability. This is a clean hand/dirty hand camp. There will mud, manure, dirt, and live animals as well as power generation, chemistry, robots, sensors, power systems, and biology labs.

There will also be lots of fun, games, design challenges and team building activities. Students will learn the basics of biochemistry and mechanical design and how to use design thinking, technology, as well as natural and renewable resources in the urban environment to create a healthy home for humans, animals, pollinators, soil microbes, and compost.

How amazing is that we can make food for food and build machines to deliver it?! I liked helping all the tiny animals we need, but don’t get to see.

Frogga Summer Camper

This camp involves wild farm animals and various insects. All animals are housed safely and involve very little threat. In BioMechanics we will be studying the movement and physiology of few key species in a safe lab environment.

New for 2024! Quantum Effects In Nature

New for 2024, we pulled out all of the molecular, atomic, and quantum aspects of our popular summer camps to introduce students to the life on the farm that happens beneath the hood of nature. We will be exploring the relationships between energy and all matter from the level of ecosystems, down to the quarks and electronics and the weird but useful way they can be used at Mezzacello Urban Farm. Quantum Effects extends all our Summer Camps with practical hands on ways of visualizing how life builds on itself.

Oh my gosh! How small do these nested realities go?! I’m not afraid, I’m just amazed!

Andrea Summer Camper

Quantum systems that will studied include the biomimicry of insect wings and chicken eyes and how they influenced digital photography. We’ll study quantum tunneling and the impact that it has on energy production, DNA synthesis, and protein folding. Lastly, we will explore light, color, and the role of the visible and invisible spectrums on chlorophyll, nitrogen fixing, and water synthesis, and molecular bonding.

A prior knowledge of quantum physics is not necessary. If your child is at all curious about life, there will be something here for them.

The key focus of this camp is exploring the molecular and physical mechanics which underly our entire society and our work here at Mezzacello. The integration of design thinking, chemistry, simple processes and biological systems, as well as Robotics, Automation Systems, and Data and Modeling Tech, and energy systems allow students to better achieve sustainability. This is a clean hand/dirty hand camp. There will mud, manure, dirt, and live animals as well as power generation, chemistry, robots, sensors, power systems, and biology labs. The math is baked into the experience – just like it is in nature.

The camp requires that all students come prepared to learn on a working farm and ready to use tools in a challenging but responsible way. That means long pants, gloves and access to sterilizable rubber boots.

Leadership Academy

Leadership Academy Cohort

New for 2024! The Leadership Academy is open to middle and High School students by invitation only. The goal of the Mezzacello Urban Farm Leadership Academy is to grow leadership and and mentorship training in a virtual/on-site training system.

Students that do take part in the Leadership Academy will be eligible to co-teach camps at Mezzacello Urban Farm. They will also be accepted as a co-host for a presentation to a world audience during the April 2014 Global innovation Field Trip which will be Livestreamed on Twitch and YouTube.

This Leadership Academy is not a General Purpose Camp. It is designed to create interns and further train previous summer camps.
